One month before Tom Schmerber takes office as the new Sheriff of Maverick County, he says he is busy organizing his staff which will accompany him when he takes charge of the department. He is working on his deputies, main collaborators and key positions who will assist him in running the affairs of his office. He has mentioned that he will not change the staff on hand, but he will make key changes in the key positions of the Sheriff's Department. The hiring of personnel will also be discussed with the Treasury Department in order to insure that the transition is done in a legal manner. The new Maverick County Sheriff said the changes that he plans to implement have more to do with management of particular situations within the administration. He said a few days ago he held a job fair with people interested in being employed within the department, the event was a huge success with nearly 200 applicants. Mr. Schmerber was present for the majority of those interviews being conducted. He said that in the next few days there will be another event to receive more applications and interview more people interested in working in different areas, adding that he is ready to take over in January. Tom Schmerber is a former Border Patrol agent and is currently a professor of history at the Eagle Pass High School.
