Head Football Coach Eric Villaseñor was proud of Vasquez’s 71 tackles, two for loss and one for fumble, one INT, five pass break ups, and one big hit.
“That’s just a little of what Rey did athletically,” said Villaseñor. “What he did for us as a program, was really model what we preached. He will forever be a Maverick.”
EPISD Athletic Director Edward Graf was next to congratulate Vasquez and his family.
“I know you were a big part of the success of the Mavericks this year. I’m confident you’re going to take those skills and talents on to the next level,” said Graf. “I know they’re going to miss you, you set a good example for all of the younger ones.”
Vasquez’s parents were next to speak, and shared their gratitude through emotional speeches thanking everyone for helping him get so far in his athletic career.
“I want to thank my wife for raising him when I’m not home, she has taught him who he is right now, responsible kid, respectful, intelligent, disciplined, and many other things. I would also like to thank the personnel at Bethel College for giving my son the opportunity to study over there, to play football, the sport that he loves; the personnel at CC Winn who accepted him when he wanted to transfer over here; all the coaches for giving him the opportunity to be on the team and show his talent out on the field; his friends for always being by his side; our friends always on our side god times bad times; and our twin boys who are his biggest fans,” said Mr.Vasquez. “My son, all I can say is thank you for being who you are, for being respectful to your mother, your teachers, for being a good kid. You don’t know how much easier it makes it for us to parents. I’m on the road a lot and I hear stories from many other drivers that their kids are big trouble. I thank god that I did not have to go through that. I want to wish you the best of luck, I know that you will succeed wherever you go, in your studies, and on the field. You’re a man, you’re not afraid to work hard and get your hands dirty, and all those skills are going to help you a lot where you’re going. I want to tell you how proud I am. You are one heck of a big brother, and one heck of a son. I love you and I wish you the best.“
Vasquez was last to speak, thanking everyone who had helped reach the accomplishment of becoming a college athlete.
“I just want to thank my parents for always being there for me, for supporting me in every decision I’ve made especially this one,” said Vasquez. “I also want to thank the coaches for accepting me and helping me get better, my friends for always being there for me during hard times, and family and friends who are always there whenever we need anything.”
