The GEO Group is in the process of obtaining full stock acquirement of Community Education Centers (CEC) another private prison facility company for $360 million dollars.CEC currently runs multiple prison / detention facilities across the State including the Kinney County Detention Center.
Reports state that GEO who was responsible for the Maverick County Detention Center through its entire existence until it abandoned ship on October 2013 leaving the now defunct 700 bed facility for dead ,will be integrating CEC into GEO Corrections & Detentions and GEO Care.
This new acquisition now gives GEO a stronger grip on the private prison business in Texas.
Unofficial reports state that Geo is in the process and talks with UMB Bank to acquire or work out a deal for the closed down Maverick County Detention Center for close to $25 million dollars. Neither GEO or UMB have made any comments on such negotiations.
Recently, the Maverick County Commissioners Court announced a release agreement with UMB Bank, N.A. as Trustee of the MCDC at its regular meeting held on Friday, February 17 2017.Basically detachingitself from the defunct Detention Center (Geo ) and any claims, other actions, or problems having to do with it for good
During the month of February the Department of Justice's new Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, issued a memo rescinding last summer's former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates decision to phase out the use of private prisons. Sessions instructed the Bureau of Prisons(BOP) to once again rely on private prisons. Yates memo back then said that the BOP would begin phasing out the use of private prisons and would not renew any contracts that were being reviewed.
The question now, is what’s next for the 700 bed facility and its investors? One plausible situation could be, it opening up privately to house illegal immigrants under U.S. President Donald Trump’s
efforts against illegal immigration. After all the facility was opened on the same type of concept many years ago.
