The Spay Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) Mobile Clinic of San Antonio visited Eagle Pass due to the efforts of local animal advocacy group, Project COMPANION. SNAP is a statewide organization that provides low cost spay and neuter services with the ultimate mission of preventing  the suffering and death of cats and dogs due to overpopulation and preventable diseases, especially in low-income areas.

“We are extremely grateful to all our volunteers and donors who have helped ProCo realize our goal of bringing this clinic to Eagle Pass,” stated President Daniela Flores-Aleman. “Spay and neuter is the solution to diminish the pet over-population and euthanasia within our community, and we are pleased to have forged successful connections across the state to provide this low cost service locally.”
It is estimated that one unspayed female cat and her offspring can have up to 4,948 kittens over the span of seven years; while an unspayed female dog and her offspring can have up to 508 puppies over the same time period.  Just this one clinic has had an impact of reducing the pet overpopulation by 40,000+ pets over the next seven years.   Project COMPANION is in the fundraising stages of hosting another clinic in the late summer months to further impact the area.
“It costs $3,500 to bring the mobile unit, and our organization subsidizes about 75 percent of the procedure, which passes along a low cost to the pet owner of only $35.00 regardless of pet size or sex,” commented Flores-Aleman. Updates for the next SNAP clinic will be given via the group’s Facebook page.
To help cover the cost of future clinics, this Saturday Project COMPANION will have a BBQ chicken plate sale with all the trimmings and a drink for $7.00 from 11am to 2pm at Bernard’s Beverage Barn on El Indio Highway. Funds raised will be matched dollar for dollar up to $2,500 by Modern Woodmen of America.
Project COMPANION is a local 501C-3 non-profit animal advocacy group that focuses on providing information and access to low cost Spay and Neutering services in order to decrease animal euthanasia and diminish the animal overpopulation in Maverick County.  In addition, ProCo promotes shelter adoption and provides animal friendly activities for pets and their families. The group is solely volunteer-based and are able to accomplish their goals through grant funding, donations, and fundraisers.
