Schmerber stated during the presentation that the program is a very effective tool that assists the sheriff’s department with the investigation of domestic violence incidents and cases. The program allows for the dedicating of one investigator to a specific case load which is the largest amount of incidents that are seen. “I wish we could have another investigator,” said Schmerber
Maverick County Sheriff Department Grants Director Ignacio Saucedo stated during the presentation that this would be the third year that the county would be funded under the project once accepted.
“The position is a 35 percent to 65 percent matching fund,” said Saucedo. “Our investigator focuses solely on violent crimes against women through assault and family violence,” added Saucedo.
The Maverick County Commissioners Court approved the agenda item unanimously.
Domestic violence against women continues being one of the biggest disconcerting issues plaguing our community on a yearly basis with hundreds of cases handled by law enforcement agencies.
“We continue addressing the domestic violence issue and recognize that seriousness of the problem, and for that reason we will not stop. It is one of the biggest problems in our community and we must find and explore every way to take it on,” said Schmerber.
