Project COMPANION participates in legislation meeting pertaining to animal welfare

The Texas Humane Legislative Network held an advocacy meeting in Austin, TX to inform animal welfare groups across the state about upcoming legislation. In attendance was Project COMPANION Vice President, Yuri Perez and member Lucy Perez. Guest speakers at the meeting included State Representatives

Celia Israel, Ina Minjarez and Gina Hinojosa whom shared their exciting plans to advance the humane treatment of animals this session. Current proposals include HB 1156, which fixes and strengthens an enforcement loophole in the Texas Tethering Statute; and HB 1357 which increases punishment for violent animal cruelty offenses and includes animal cruelty as a family violence crime when involving family members. 

“It was a great opportunity to meet and share information about animal welfare with THLN,” said Perez. “We hope to continue our working relationship in order to make Eagle Pass a safer place for animals.” 

In addition, Perez stated that THLN is asking constituents to request State Representatives to Co-Author HB1156, which will help to get this life saving legislation passed. Project COMPANION is a local non-profit animal advocacy group that focuses on providing information and access to low cost Spay and Neutering services in order to decrease animal euthanasia and diminish the animal overpopulation in Maverick County.  In addition, ProCo promotes shelter adoption and provides animal friendly activities for pets and their families.
