Initial reports stated that the uproar began at approximately 6:45 to 7:00 p.m., and was ongoing until about 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 26.
Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber said he spoke with the Kinney County Sheriff who had the help of area US Border Patrol agents, DPS, and US Marshals to control the situation and took about 60 inmates to the Del Rio facility.
The Kinney County Detention Center had a similar riot occur back in December 28 ,2008, when 30 prisoners refused to return to their cells from an indoor recreation area, and instead set fire to mattresses and clothing.
Prison facility reports show that the detention center is housing up to 416 federal pretrial prisoners for the United States Marshal’s Administration.
Most of the prisoners in the facility are awaiting some form of adjudication from the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas in Del Rio, Texas.
The Kinney County Detention Center is managed by Community Education Centers (CEC) a private organization who runs the facility for Kinney County, Texas.
