On Saturday, January 21, 2017, millions of people gathered across the entire nation and world in solidarity with the Women’s March.

Locally inspired by the Women’s March , Diana Hardt spear-headed an event which brought out a solid group of people in unity against many major issues that confront the nation and world today.

People from all walks of life gathered at the historic San Juan plaza where they were greeted by Sandra Ruiz Rodriguez, master of ceremony who spoke and touched base on a variety of topics including women/girl empowerment.

The Girls Scouts troop then led the event in the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance and Amanda Lee Martin sang a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem.

San Lucas Lutheran Church Pastor Paul Bailie gave an invocation prayer asking for solidarity and peace and prayer for our country and for people all across the world.

Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey E Cantu spoke on behalf of the city and community .“Our voices as a community will not be silenced and that women rights are protected . This new President that has entered , of course we must continue showing great respect to the office , however we need to assure that we as communities respect ourselves to assure that our voices are heard.” said Cantu

One of the most touching moments came when District 74 State Representative Poncho Nevarez approached the microphone to speak as an invited guest.

Nevarez thanked the group for the invitation to speak on issues that are of a major importance being the father of girls.

Nevarez then turned the microphone over to his daughter , 14 yr old Renata Nevarez who used few words to make such a strong statement. “I am 14 years old and I do not agree with what our now President is doing or proposing to do.” she said overwhelmed with tears “I’ve been taught that I have to accept what I can’t change. But that I can change what I cannot accept. I will get to work in doing so.” she concluded

Dr.Jonathan Hook eloquently spoke of the major issues that will test us as a nation but that we must resolve and push forth in unity.

Council woman Gloria Hernandez also spoke, touching important topics such as the all out attack on the education system by what appears to be a Trump administration hell bent on gutting vital pieces of it.

Daniela Flores Aleman president of the LGBT organization also spoke during the event.

Maverick County Commissioner Pct. 4 Roberto Ruiz was also present accompanying his daughter during the women’s march. Carolina Buentello Gonzalez of the Winter Garden Women’s shelter participated in the event as well.

The group then proceeded to march in unity with the millions of people all across this great nation and world in a sign of solidarity.
