Arturo Rodriguez of San Benito, Texas has been chosen as the new City Manager for Eagle Pass.
Not much is known of Rodriguez, except that he was previously Interim City Manager in San Benito, before being given the position of Assistant City Manager.
The decision came after an executive session that lasted a little over an hour. The vote for Rodriguez passed 4 to 1, with the only dissenting vote coming from Councilwoman Yolanda Ramón.
The three finalists for the position were Rodriguez, and Eagle Pass natives Jesus Sanchez, and Rudy Bowles. A fourth candidate named Odis Jones seemed to be seriously considered, traveling from Michigan to have a meet and greet with the community, but later expressed that he was no longer interested in the position and had found employment elsewhere.
The position had been temporarily filled by Interim City Manager Roberto Gonzalez while the council looked for Chavez’s replacement.
The city manager position had been open for months since Hector Chavez who previously held the position was arrested for bribery and obstruction charges related to his participation in a “pay-to-play” scheme involving a Maverick County landfill contract. Chavez was charged back in April, 2016 on a four-count federal grand jury indictment, which charged Chavez with one count each of paying a bribe to an agent of an organization receiving federal funds; falsification of records in a federal investigation; obstruction of justice; and false statement to a federal agent.
