The Eagle Pass High School Eagles and C.C. Winn Mavericks clashed  in the 11th Annual “Battle on the Border” on Friday night in front of a packed crowd of loyal Eagle Pass football fans. It was standing room only as the game commenced pitting cross town rivals against each other once again. The Eagles solidified their dominance with yet another victory against the Mavericks making their record a perfect 11 to 0.

The Mavericks definitely did not disappoint their fans by fighting throughout the contest. The Mavs were first to strike on the score board with a touchdown early in the first quarter by QB Julio Ruiz, making the score 6 to 0 after a botched extra point.

The Eagles countered soon after with an interception which gave them great field position resulting in a score by Eagle QB Ricky Medina in the second quarter making it 7 to 6.

The Eagles once again found the end zone in the third quarter with a pass to Ricky Reyes putting them up 14 to 6.

Just as the Maverick fans were getting restless, the Mavs put together a drive ending in a Ruben Esquivel score on a reverse which left the Eagle defense on their heels making the score 14 to 12 after a failed two-point conversion.

Eagle Jose Riojas extended their lead in the fourth quarter with a touchdown clinching the game for the Eagles with a score of 21 to 12.

It was a hard fought contest by both teams and Friday’s game adds yet another chapter to this cross town rivalry saga.

The Eagles improved to a 2 to 1 record. They next game will be against Alexander for a 6A Region IV District 29 battle on Thursday, September 15. Eagle Pass will play a Bulldogs squad coming off a 40-0 non-league loss to Clemens (Schertz, TX). The Bulldogs record now stands at 0-3.

The Mavericks play the Mission Eagles (Mission, TX) in a non-league battle, on Friday, September 16. Winn will attempt to advance on its 2-1 season record. The Eagles go into the battle with a 1-2 record after their 42-21 non-league win over Hanna (Brownsville, TX).
