The first ever spirit week press conference for CC Winn and EPHS football teams leading up to the “Battle on the Border” was held Thursday morning.
In the audience to show their support were Battle of the MINIS winners Sam Houston Elementary and Graves Elementary, as well as student council members, cheerleaders, dance teams, and parents.
They began with a student-created compilation of footage from every past Mavericks versus Eagles football game, and continued with questions for principals, athletic directors, coaches, and football players.
EPHS Principal John Cox said he appreciated the sacrifice the athletes made, and appreciated the spirit students showed at Tuesday’s event. He also reminded football players to keep sportsmanship in mind Friday night.
“We are rivals, we’re not enemies,” said Cox.
CC Winn Principal Jesus Diaz-Wever also urged athletes and fans to be respectful of the other team. He said he knew each team would try their best and looked forward to the game.
”As you know I’m a Maverick fan, i don’t need to hide that, but whoever wins, I know it’s a very well-deserved win,” said Diaz-Wever. “Whatever outcome we get, I know 120 percent was given by both sides.”
Players from both sides were excited to give their all at Friday night’s game, especially for many who will be graduating in May. Athletes cited their relationship with their teammates, or as they called them, their brothers, as a huge part of their success and drive to play. Both Eagles and Mavericks said the presence of fans in the stands at the games was an amazing feeling.
Head Football Coaches Tom Gonzalez and Eric Villaseñor expressed their excitement for the game and thanked EPISD, parents, and their athletes for their continued support and dedication.
The event ended with a few words from Superintendent Gilberto Gonzalez who thanked EPISD Public Information Officer Daniella Byrne and everyone who participated in organizing the first ever spirit week.
