With the high school football season beginning, both CC Winn High School and Eagle Pass High School teams are looking forward to what this season will bring.

Head Football Coach Eric Villaseñor said the team has played two scrimmages so far, which have helped prepare players.

“It’s a very senior heavy ball club with this group. We have 40 seniors coming into the season: eight starters on defense coming back; eight starters on offense coming back,” said Villaseñor. “We’re still kind of putting the pieces together in that regard and that’s what scrimmages are about: evaluating who is being productive and who is going to help us come out with those victories.”

Villaseñor said there have been some changes to the district.

“When realignment came out in February, we were originally realigned with Corpus and Alice. They won their appeal with UIL which put us in a 16 district with Uvalde, Floresville, San Antonio Southside, San Antonio Harlendale, San Antonio McCollum and ourselves,” said Villaseñor.

The Mavericks have five district games, five non-district games scheduled. The first district game will be against San Antonio McCullum.

“[These are] with quality opponents, and I think they’re going to make us better heading into the district slate come October,” said Villaseñor. “October is a critical month for us, it’s going to make or break us. We’ve got four district games that month, but the pre-season slate we’ve scheduled will make us a better ball club and prepare us heading into the 29AAAAA.”

Villaseñor would like to thank Coaches Heriberto Roiz , Coach Carlos Soto, Coach Isaac Gracie ,Coach Fred Pañagua, Coach Domingo Lopez, Coach Rene Ramirez,Coach Saul Casas, Coach JJ Iracheta, Coach Sergio Esquivel, and Coach Ricardo Hoffman, as well as the fans.

“We’re looking forward to this season, and we want to tell our fans to support us in every which way possible,” said Villaseñor. “Wear your silver, wear your black, and come out and support the Mavericks.”

Eagle Pass High School Head Football Coach Tom Gonzalez shared his excitement for the season as well.

“We took our bumps last year, and we knew it was going to be a tough season, but we’re expecting a lot of things from these guys,” said Gonzalez. “A lot of them have been starting for two or three years for us and we’ve got high expectations.”

Gonzalez said the team would still be in the same district, which has added two high schools: San Antonio Southwest and San Antonio South San.

“We’ve been playing Southwest the past three or four years. Last year they beat us in overtime so we know the type of opponent we have,” said Gonzalez. “We’re still playing the Laredo Schools and they’re all real tough. For non-district we have Medina Valley to open up the season,Cigarroa, and then CC Winn.”

The Eagles’ first scrimmage against Laredo Martin took place at the SAC this weekend.
