“I talked to my family to come to this decision, we’ve been thinking about that for a while. We were just holding off until the right time, and I think for us this is the right time,” said Barrera who thanked his wife, children, parents, parents-in-law, and board trustees Dr. Hector Alvarez and Hilda Martinez for supporting him in his decision.
Barrera said his young children, and the future education of all EPISD students, were a driving force in his choice to run for board trustee.
“I’d like to see as many kids as possible go on to college or any university. That’s going to be one of my big things, to try to get all these kids as much help as possible,” said Barrera. “I know everybody says we’ve got to get them there, but we have to have the right tools to get them there. We sometimes focus a lot on the parents and kids which is very important, but we also have to look at the teachers themselves, all the employees that work for the school district, try to help them out, give them as many tools as we can to get them going.“
EPISD Elections Administrator Susana Perez said the other candidates for Position 1 at this moment are Ronnie Rivera and Juan Jose “Pachis” Olivares. Positions 2,6, and 7 are also open. In the running are current board trustees Ignacio “Nacho” Saucedo, Hector Alvarez, and Glenna Purcell, respectively.
Those who wish to apply to run for the November 8 election can do so until Monday August 22 at 5:00 p.m.
Registration can be done during central office business hours from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. For questions or informations regarding the election they may contact Perez at 830-773-5181 ext. 1046.
