Uvalde, Texas – A total of 44 students were on hand for orientation on Thursday (July 28) as the Middle Rio Grande Law Enforcement Academy prepares to begin the fall semester.

Instruction in the 18-week academy will officially begin on the first day of class Monday, Aug. 1. The class will end in December 2.

Amy Maldonado and Johnny Field were hired as fulltime instructors in order to manage the largest class the academy has had in all of its years of operation.

Maldonado is a 20-year veteran and has spent the last 16 years working with the Uvalde Police Department.

Fields is a 16-year veteran and has spent the last four years as constable for precinct one in Uvalde.

“This is the first time we have had such a large class, we even had to hire two additional instructors” said Andy Davila, academy coordinator. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to be able to work with Amy and Johnny, but more importantly I’m particularly excited for the cadets, who will have a wealth of knowledge at their disposal with these new instructors.”
