Approximately 65 participants, along with friends and families,  came out to participate in  Eagle Pass’ first ever canoe & kayak race on Saturday, July 2.

The first kayak race was won by Raymundo Palacios of Piedras Negras, who was followed by Dennis Johnson of Eagle Pass, and Carlos de la Cruz of San Antonio took third place. 

Tlalhikatzin Gutierrez of Dallas took first place in the second kayak race, followed by second place winner Cesar Rodriguez of Piedras Negras, and third place winner Jose Darwin Lechller of Nava. 

The third kayak race’s first place winner was Eleazar Ruiz, followed by second place winner Julio Aleman, and third place winner Alan Ruiz, all from Eagle Pass.

Julio Valdez took first place for the fourth kayak race, followed by second place winner Adrienne Barbeau, and third place winner Ryan Pike, also all from Eagle Pass. 

The fifth kayak race was won by Raymundo Palacios of Piedras Negras followed by second place winner Oscar Ramirez also of Piedras Negras, and third place winner James Ibarra of Castroville.

First, second, and third places for the sixth race were won by members of the Eagle Pass Fire Department. 

The canoe race was won by Carlos Carreon and Tomas Palomo of Piedras Negras, followed by second place winners Santos Medrano and Arturo Alvarez of Eagle Pass, and third place winners Hector Alvarez and Cristina Lozano, Mr. and Mrs. Collin  and Sherri Brack took home fourth place, Lizette Guerra Medrano and Vanessa Alaniz won fifth place, Kato Guajardo and Alberto Alonso won sixth, Evelin Morales and Placido Madera won seventh, Jenny Snyder and Jose Olivera won eighth, and Mr. and Mrs. Arnulfo Gonzalez won ninth place. All were from Eagle Pass except first place winners Carreon and Palomo. 

Jessie Fuentes of Epi’s Canoe & Kayak Team, who helped organize the event along with the city, said the event was so successful that they are already in preliminary talks to plan the next event.

“There’s been such a great response to it that we’’re trying to schedule one for Labor Day,” said Fuentes.
