A fire broke out at a local bar on El Indio Highway late Tuesday evening.

Assistant Fire Chief Felix Carrazco said the Eagle Pass Police Department received a call to their 9-1-1 center in reference to smoke coming from the business called Gerardo’s Bar near the Eagle Pass city limits. EPPD then notified the fire department.

“The Eagle Pass Fire Department  responded with multiple fire engines,” said Carrazco, adding that there were fifteen firefighters helping to put out the flames. “On arrival of the first unit, they did report a fire and smoke visible coming out from the back part of the building. Specifically on the roof area.”

Also on the scene were approximately four sheriff’s deputies and five police officers, said Carrazco, who were a big help in directing traffic in the busy area.

Within the first thirty minutes that the fire department arrived, the fire was under control, said Carrazco.

“After that, they concentrated on the extension of the fire. They noticed that the fire had originated on the roof and had traveled within the attic of the facility,” said Carrazco. “One of the things they noticed was that the facility was locked, the bar was not in service at the time of the fire.”

After salvage and overhaul, firefighters determined that fifty percent of the building had been damaged, with most of the damage being structural, and heavy fire damage in the attic space.

Despite the destruction of the bar, Carrazco said there was no risk that residents nearby would be harmed.

“Everything was contained within its own building,” said Carrazco. “At no point were the surrounding buildings in danger.”

The fire is still being investigated by the fire marshal’s office as to the actual cause.
