The Eagle Pass Parks and Recreation Department continues to prepare for a number of events happening this summer.

As part of National Parks and Recreation Month, the department will be organizing their thirteenth annual Summer Sizzler 5K Run and Bike Race.

"All ages are welcome. We have different categories and all categories will be awarded medals for top three finishes,” said Sanchez.

The 5K Run will be starting in Shelby Park and will take runners up Main Street and then onto Adams street. Runners will then pass through the historic Fort Duncan area and under International Bridge II, which leads to the half way point of the 5K run. Participants will then turn around and come back towards Shelby Park for the finish.

"The top three times will be awarded cash prizes. First place will receive $100, $50 for second place, and $25 for third,” said Sanchez. “You can register at the mulit-purpose center prior to the event or on the day of the race. Parks and Recreation staff will be here to help."

The bike race will be held Saturday, July 19, and includes a 4 mile, 10 mile, 30 mile, and 50 mile trek towards El Indio.

The races begin at Dessert Lanes Bowling Alley on El Indio Hwy. The competitors will then travel on El Indio Hwy until they reach the halfway point for their race.

The 50 mile race will pass El Indio, Texas on the way to Carrizo Springs and will return at the 25 mile point before heading back home for the finish. The top three contestants will receive medals, and the top three best overall times will be awarded cash prizes. First place will take home $400, second place wins $200, and third place will be awarded $100.

"We are expecting racers from all around our area such as Piedras Negras, Acuna, Del Rio, San Antonio. The heat is a concern which is why we are holding the events at eight in the morning,” said Sanchez. “The department is well aware of the scorching heat in our areas and will be prepared to deal with the temperatures come race day.”

The registration cost for both races is $15 per person. The first 25 to register for the respective races will receive a Summer Sizzler Race Series t-shirt.
