Opponents of Dos Republicas coal mine to protest in Austin

The battle to keep the Dos Republicas coal mine from expanding continues as several Native groups, elected officials, environmental, and social justice advices will be gathering in Austin for a demonstration and press conference. 

The demonstration will follow a TCEQ hearing for the renewal of Dos Republicas’ wastewater discharge permit renewal. 

Demonstrators argue that the coal mine’s contamination of Elm Creek and the Rio Grande River with chemicals and heavy metals that make the water unsafe for drinking and recreation, and damages the local economy.

Speakers will include Senior Organizing Manager for the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign Tane Ward, Mayor of Eagle Pass Ramsey English Cantu, State Senator Carlos Uresti, State Judge David Saucedo, Tribe Chairman of Carrizo Tribe Juan Mancias, and Representative of Maverick County Environmental and Public Health Association Martha Baxter. 

The demonstration was  held Wednesday, July 6, in Austin at TCEQ Headquarters,  with a press conference following the hearing for the renewal of the wastewater discharge permit.
