The demonstration will follow a TCEQ hearing for the renewal of Dos Republicas’ wastewater discharge permit renewal.
Demonstrators argue that the coal mine’s contamination of Elm Creek and the Rio Grande River with chemicals and heavy metals that make the water unsafe for drinking and recreation, and damages the local economy.
Speakers will include Senior Organizing Manager for the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign Tane Ward, Mayor of Eagle Pass Ramsey English Cantu, State Senator Carlos Uresti, State Judge David Saucedo, Tribe Chairman of Carrizo Tribe Juan Mancias, and Representative of Maverick County Environmental and Public Health Association Martha Baxter.
The demonstration was held Wednesday, July 6, in Austin at TCEQ Headquarters, with a press conference following the hearing for the renewal of the wastewater discharge permit.
