Cuellar spoke of how he hoped the department could help give children, like those participating in their summer programs, a chance to become real heroes.
“This July, we want to help you discover your powers at parks and recreation. When we work together to further help the wellness, observation, and social efforts, awesome things happen because when our powers combine, we change lives,” said Cuellar.
Cuellar described the history of parks and recreation.
“Let me tell you about the year 1965. That year, on August 14, the National Recreation and Park Association, they’re known as NRPA, was formed when five organizations joined together, and in 2016, we are celebrating 51 years of NRPA and the association that is dedicated to advancing parks, recreation and conservation efforts that enhance quality of life for all people,” said Cuellar.
As part of the momentous occasion, Cuellar said the City of Eagle Pass’ Parks and Recreation Department had a variety of activities planned.
“We have weekly summer camps, youth soccer leagues, junior high basketball leagues, activities for life skills and special needs children, and we also have special events like the Fourth of July parade on Monday, the Summer Sizzler 5K run, and a 50 mile bike race,” said Cuellar. “This month also highlights the hard work and dedication of parks and recreation departments across the country and the joy that comes from our places and spaces.”
This joy that is something Cuellar says could not be done without the help of the department’s staff.
“The world of parks and recreation touches more than 300 million people in this country, from the largest cities to the most rural communities, other parks and recreation agencies around the country are united in their mission to improve health, environment, and provide americans with a higher quality of living,” said Cuellar. “At this moment i want to thank the time to thank the staff on the parks and recreation department because without their hard work and dedication it would be impossible to do what we do to make our community the great place it is.”
English Cantú then presented the proclamation honoring parks and recreation month.
“This is something that is really important in any community, it’s something that’s going to bring opportunities for economic development, to live healthier lifestyles. When you are recreating you are ultimately taking care of yourself, whether it’s walking in a park, playing in one of the leagues or taking part in our summer programs,” said English Cantú. “On behalf of the city council i want to commend the parks and recreation department because you all have done exceptionally well in making sure that when it comes to getting services to our citizens, and that they continue getting them in a timely matter.”
