A Maverick County Sheriff’s Department investigation that started as a potential kidnapping and ransom ended with the department discovering it was a case of extortion.

Martin Lester contacted the Maverick County Sheriff’s Department when his 32-year-old son Frederick Ernest Lester texted him saying that he was being held for ransom.

“The son [said] by being at the wrong place at the wrong time, he was picked up by the cartels,” said Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber. “He said they wanted a certain amount of money, and if the father did not pay the money, they would cut him into pieces.”

Frederick did not say how much money it was that he wanted.

Sergeant Edna Martinez, who worked on the case, found Frederick’s girlfriend, Cynthia Moreno, who gave Martinez information on where some of his friends were staying.

Martinez eventually found Frederick, who admitted he had made the whole thing up because he needed money.

Martin was advised that his son had not been kidnapped, and was doing fine, said Schmerber.

“Of course the father was relieved that he wasn’t hurt,” said Schmerber.

Frederick was not kept in county custody, because of his history as an MHMR patient.

“We didn’t charge him with anything,” said Schmerber. “We just arrested him and transported him to the MHMR so they could give him medication.”
