“We’re all here because of the sacrifices of our parents,” said State Rep. Pete Gallego. “I’m lucky to have my mother here with me, who never imagined that her son would one day run for Congress. Only in this country can someone go from washing dishes in a restaurant to having the opportunity to introduce the 42nd President of the United States. Everyone here wants a shot at the American dream.”
“I’m here to support Pete Gallego,” said President Bill Clinton. “You need to get out and vote so we can send Pete Gallego to Congress.”
President Clinton praised Rep. Gallego for voting for the Texas version of the DREAM Act, supporting the federal DREAM Act, and for creating the state’s DNA database to ensure that guilty people are prosecuted and that innocent people are not sent to jail.
President Bill Clinton denounced Congressman Canseco’s use of the image of Jesus in an attack against Rep. Gallego, saying that no political party had a monopoly on religion or the flag. He also chastised Congressman Canseco for repeating the same false attack Republicans are using against Democrats across the country on Medicare. President Clinton referenced Congressman Canseco’s vote for the Ryan budget, and noted that Pete Gallego wasn’t even in Congress to take the vote for which he’s being attacked.
“Not only is Pete’s opponent attacking Pete for something he himself did,” added President Clinton “he’s attacking Pete for doing something he couldn’t even do.”
President Clinton concluded by energizing the audience and encouraging the crowd to vote.
“If every person in Texas registered and voted, this would be a Democratic state,” added President Clinton. “If you believe in the future that the people on this stage represent – and I do – then you have to show up and stand with them.”
