The Candles for Life Organization is preparing its annual Walk-a-Thon which will be held at the Maverick County Lake this year on October 21st and they are looking for organizations clubs and teams who would like to participate in assisting the American Cancer Society in collecting funds for a worthy cause. According to organizers the event will take place at the lake and will begin at 4 PM with the donation pick up and distribution of the actual candles to honor those who have fought and defeated the dreaded disease or in memoriam of those of our loved ones who have fallen victims and whom we so wish to honor on this very symbolic day of remembrance and retrospect. The organizers also are counting on the participation of all of our local cancer survivors and their families to lead the way in order to give those who are presently fighting the disease the motivation and courage to carry on as the road to recovery is not an easy one. Organizers have also informed The News Gram that all resources collected from this event will remain in Maverick County to assist those and their families in dealing with the unexpected expenses that go into dealing with the treatment and other unforseen expenditures that go hand in hand with the fight against cancer. The program for that day is as follows: At 5 PM the crowd will be entertained by several Zumba squads and dance teams from various local schools. At 6 PM the presentation of colors by a local Girl Scouts troupe Deacon Juan Martinez of OLOR Church will also give a benediction. At 6:30 PM the Parade of Survivors will take place along with their family members which is a very moving event in itself. At 7 PM the Walk of Life begins with all participating teams. At 8 PM will be the traditional lighting of the Candles for Life in honor of or in memory of those who have battled cancer. The entire community is invited to attend.
