“These types of social media interfere with the employees' ability to do their work," said Sanchez.
He added that a social media policy against this type of behavior during working hours has been in place for some time and has been mismanaged.
"The technology equipment with the county is to serve the citizens of Maverick County, not to be checking their Facebook page or Twitter feeds.
"At this point there are no defined consequences other than it's the responsibility of the supervisor that this does not affect the day to day operations of the county. An employee shouldn't be on the phone when you should be working."
He concluded that if a supervisor were to repeatedly catch an employee violating this policy, it would be up to the supervisor to write the employee up each time specifying the consequences of such behavior which ultimately could lead to termination.
He also said that Armando Gonzalez in the Auditor's office, the county's Information Technology liaison, is working on creating a firewall in order to help curb this at the PC level, however, Mr. Sanchez says that the employees use their phones now which most have internet technology available where these social media sites can be accessed.
