"I'm encouraged by groups like you all's. I'm encouraged by the fact that you all care enough to be here. There are so many issues that if we pull ourselves too far to the left or too far to the right, we aren't really doing what we're supposed to be doing. I hope I can continue serving a district as wonderful as this," said the sophomore representative who will be seeking his third term next year.
When asked about the veritable closing of the educational gap between Hispanics, Blacks and Whites in this country, Nevarez had the following to say, "It's going to come down to making sure the opportunities and the ground that we have already gained since Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka to make sure that we don't fall back. It's not an accident that in 2011, the first time that Hispanics became a majority in terms of public schools in this state, that they started to cut back massively in terms of public education."
"We've caught them in numbers, but where we have not surpassed them is in academics. A lot of that has to do in my opinion, in funding. We are so obsessed with making all these cuts that are unnecessary that hamstring school districts. The school districts that are mostly affected are districts like ours or Fort Davis for example. It's a Chapter 41 school, but because of the way the system is set up, that district is circling the drain."
"In the deepest, darkest corners, the deepest, darkest board rooms, in the deepest, darkest areas of that county, these are the discussions being had about 'How do we hamstring this majority/minority in this state and that's a way to do so."
When asked what his main focus of his address here today to the MCRSPA, "It was a good opportunity to get with our retired teachers, to talk to them about the $768,000,000.00 of the $3.6 billion we were able to put into the TRS in terms of health benefits and about the interim study that's being done about the actuarial soundness of the benefit plan. There's a good sign that we're moving in the right direction. We also talked about the annuity payments which will be at 13 instead of 12 by moving it to the end of the month, which could help retirees on their taxes."
