Assistant Band Director at Veterans Memorial High School in Corpus Christi Jesus Lopez, 48, a graduate of Eagle Pass High School, was tragically killed in a freak accident on Tuesday which has left the staff and student body at the high school struck with grief and officers trying to decipher what exactly took place. According to reports, officers responded to a call in reference to a two vehicle crash off of Cimarron Boulevard at approximately 5:22 PM.

The report says that Lopez was still in the driveway of the school when a 26 year-old man driving a red Ford F-150 pickup truck went off the roadway striking the driver's side door of a Dodge Charger being driven by Lopez. Both vehicles came to rest on the soil at Veterans Memorial High School.

Lopez, a graduate of Eagle Pass High School and Texas A&M University-Kingsville, had been employed with CCISD from 1998-2002 before serving as band director at Mathis Independence School District from 2005-2007.

Lopez returned to the CCISD in 2007 and has been employed there ever since.

Counseling was available for students at VMHS and Moody High School, where Lopez previously worked.

CCISD students on social media announced plans to wear royal blue Wednesday in honor of Lopez.

The 26-year-old man did not suffer life-threatening injuries and has not been formally charged. According to sources alcohol was ruled out as a factor in the wreck, but police are trying to determine the pickup's speed before the collision.

The speed limit on that stretch of road is 35 MPH and there was significant damage to both vehicles which resulted in Lopez' death.
