The Mustangs, who will be in town next week to face the Eagle Pass Eagles, are part of an incident which has two of their players suspended from school as well as indefinitely from the team for what video footage, which absolutely went viral the night that it happened, showing John Jay Safety Victor Rojas, at the onset of the play, run about seven paces directly into referee Robert Watts before teammate and Jay Cornerback, Michael Moreno proceeding to spear the man, who was on the ground and clearly shaken from the first hit, with his helmet.
According to sources. the question of a lack of control of the team and its players has arisen as Moreno had been involved in two highly questionable plays before this one which garnered national media coverage on ESPN Monday. The first was a play where Moreno was called for a late hit on a Marble Falls player. Moreno was not taken out of the game.
The next was another late hit on the Marble Falls quarterback who was kneeling the ball to go into the locker room at halftime, but the personal foul which resulted in the ejection of another Mustang player, another unnecessary roughness play involving Moreno, stopped the clock and Marble Falls would have to run at least one more play. Again Moreno was left on the field.
The next play would be the one six million viewers have seen on YouTube since Sunday, showing the two players blatantly attacking the defenseless referee from behind and apparently pre-emptively planned.
The video footage, which is very graphic, is the key evidence in what may lead to team sanctions and/or criminal charges being filed against the school, team, coaches or players as the Labor Day holiday interfered with UIL addressing the issue. School administrators were scheduled to meet with officials of the University Interscholastic League on Tuesday. We spoke to local long-time official Ramon Ramirez on Monday who had the following to say in reference to this situation. "We need to let everybody know that we as officials, we do make mistakes once in a while. I don't know what the situation is, but that incident was uncalled for. I don't know what is going to happen to those two kids or the team, but there should be serious consequences," said Ramirez who was attending long-time Eagle Pass sportsman Conrado Perez' funeral services Monday morning. "It has to do with the attitude of the kids playing the game these days. They have a different attitude than players from a long time ago where players went to play, to do whatever they were told to do and not take matters into their own hands." Ramirez said that he's not sure of the situation beforehand, whether it was justified to eject players including offensive standout Moses Reynolds, but he did have the following to say in respect to the play that has the nation in serious disbelief, "Officials are there to set the rules, abide by the rules and play with the rules. No matter how bad they feel about a call, no player or coach should do that or send somebody to do something like that."
