The Eagle Pass Police Department has issued a top priority press release warning citizens of a dangerous telephone scam which is leading to the loss of thousands of dollars. According to the release, several reports and instances have come to light with the Eagle Pass Police Department.   Unsuspecting persons are called via telephone and the goal of the caller is to extort money by making claims to being a family member who is in dire need of money due to an illness or some other exaggerated claim. The calls are mostly made to the elderly but are attempted on all persons.

The Eagle Pass Police Department recommends before giving any credit card or bank information or sending "MoneyGrams" or cash to any person over the telephone, please verify the source. Call the alleged family member or organization to verify the legality of the request before sending any money. This safety step will prevent a person from being extorted for money.
