County in State of Emergency Over MCDC Payroll
Maverick County Commissioner's Court were all present on Thursday morning at an emergency meeting called in order to conduct a series of budget transfers in order to fulfill their obligations to make the final payroll for the employees of the nearly defunct Maverick County Detention Center, the center formerly known as GEO.
What is not known is why the fund which was set aside at the onset of said project for the county to use in case of emergencies was never utilized, and an even bigger question is whether Maverick County which is in need of such funds to reimburse itself, if you will, for the failed endeavor.
If said funds were allowed access to during the eighteen months that the facility was in the hands of the county, perhaps neither of these drastic measures would have needed to be taken, but the saga of the Maverick County Detention Center is far from over according to sources who are hopeful that the jail could be opened again in the not too distant future.
What is positive about this situation is that the county may be able to bounce back from this sooner than later with the lack of the burden and responsibility of paying from their own coffers for the day-to-day operations of the MCDC after August the 15th when the facility officially closes its doors.
"We are declaring Maverick County in a state of emergency, is that correct?" asked Judge David Saucedo before Commissioner Gerardo Morales proceeded to voice his specific motion to move $200,000.00 from one fund to another and from that fund to the payroll department in order for them to disburse the last checks to those 70-80 employees left on the facility's payroll.
Under item 3 (b), (c), "My motion would be to transfer money needed from the deficit reduction account to the general fund account and then to the payroll account to pay the employees at the Maverick County Detention Center and to amend the original budget not to exceed $200,000.00 for that payroll," stated Morales.
With this said, the court proceeded to vote unanimously to do just that and the emergency meeting was adjourned.
