Several jailers who have been at the Maverick County Detention Center since its time as a GEO facility are speaking out in reference to the closing of the facility.

"We were not aware of any commissioner's meeting that took place last week," said one complainant who preferred to remain anonymous, because of his fear that in Maverick County "they will literally attack, retaliate you name it."

He added, "In fact we found out through your paper that our facility was closing in thirty days.  Maverick County has failed to give us any information till tis day.  Our warden informed us today that Judge Saucedo has not accepted any proposals from the Bond Holders.  Our only concern is applying for unemployment benefits as a part time employer and denied because we were against them.  We have always been treated unfairly by Maverick County."

Another Licensed Correctional Officer who also will remain unnamed said it was not the bond holder's fault, it was the county who is to blame for the closing of the facility, "The county was never qualified to run this type of facility."

According to Sheriff Tom Schmerber, the training his officers and jailers receive is above and beyond that of the jailers in the detention center.

Schmerber also said that they were going to meet on Monday before he and his staff go to address the workers on Tuesday, "I've been at the Sheriff's Conference all week, however I did inform the warden to advise the employees of the situation."

"The sheriff, chief and business manager has not visited the facility in months.  They hire people without training, education or experience.  Officers were doing things they weren't supposed to be doing with the offenders, let's put it that way.  We've also been harassed, verbal abuse, retaliation, gossip, low pay and false promises."

These two individuals say that assistance from the Middle Rio Grand Workforce Center is a lie. "In fact no one has shown up in our facility from the Workforce and FYI, three officers from every shift were told to only work eight hours of our twelve hour shifts."

"We all have families to feed and bills to pay.  We want answers and we want them to just let us go if they are going to work us eight hour per week.  Pay us our retirement or pay us the 90 days like GEO did."
