The final public hearing on the raising of County taxes will be held today at 5:00 P.M. at the County Commissioner's Court Chambers. As the County continues to prepare the final stages of the budget for the next Fiscal Year, one item suggested by Financial Adviser Robert Rodriguez was the raising of taxes from 0.51 to 0.58 for every $100.00 of property value. Members of the general public are invited to attend and give their opinions and/or suggestions as to the proposed increase. Several concerned citizens were present at the first public hearing and expressed their much heated disdain at the proposed hikes among other inconsistencies they felt were occurring at the County level.

Former EPFD Chief Guadalupe Cardona was on hand to express his concerns which were publicized in an earlier edition of The News Gram citing that many of our citizens live paycheck to paycheck and such an increase will hit them the hardest.  He also mentioned the fact that some of the people who fell victim to the latest cuts were employees who lost their jobs, some of which were only a year away from retirement. Another concern which came to light from Sonia Shannon last week was the fact that many people may be against such an increase do not make the time to come and make their concerns known. Cardona also took advantage of the microphone time to express concerns of mismanagement of funds he was aware of, when he was with the County Road and Bridge Department and he felt that the present deficit was no fault of those let go nor of the taxpayer. After said hearing, Commissioner's Court is scheduled to meet and finalize the budget for the upcoming year.
