-Maverick County

The first same sex couple to obtain their marriage certificate in Maverick County did so at approximately 12:15 PM at the County Clerk's office on Tuesday, June 30th, 2015.

Sonia Flores, 48, and Maria Saucedo, 56, were the first to complete their form, pay their fee of $84.50 and receive their license which after 72 hours will be valid and the couple will have 90 days to be wed.

"We had considered going to another state in order to legally be married, but we are super happy that we can now get married right here in the State of Texas," stated Saucedo who says she hails from San Antonio and met her partner some years ago when she came to Eagle Pass.  She had been previously married and has four children, but after getting a divorce from her former husband she met her new partner and fell in love and the rest as she said, "is history."

The newly adopted procedure is now available at the County Clerk's office since a decision was handed down on Friday by the United States Supreme Court in a 5-4 vote legalizing same-sex marriage.

That same day, five couples came by Sara Montemayor's office requesting information on how to obtain said license, however she did not have the appropriate form and was awaiting the form prescribed by the Bureau of Vital Statistics which at the time was specifically for a male and a female. Now the form simply states Applicant A and Applicant B. When asked what advice she would give to persons in this same situation she added, "Don't be afraid, this is a historic moment.  Be free and be happy.  Live a long, happy life."
