“I want to thank all the people who support this event, secondly, our kids really love this event, that’s why we have it each and every year as we are only obligated to have it once every two years,” said CC Winn Special Education Supervisor Rudy Villalpando, “Mrs. Delia Gonzalez, our Director makes sure we have this event every year,” Villalpando added before we took the time to note that the event is taking place in spite of the inclement weather which shows not only the resilience of those behind the scenes, but the desire of the students to participate, “Our kids bring the sunshine out in us and that’s why we have the energy and we make an extra effort to see this event to fruition.”
The inclement weather impeded a troop of US Border Patrolmen and Customs Agents who were going to run their traditional torch run from the point of entry to the Student Activity Center, but it didn’t hold them back from participating as Geraldo Hinojo and his team of runners which included Angel Pracedo, Diego Cordova, Andrew Rios and quite a few others who also made their presence at the stadium on this a very important week for them, National Law Enforcement Week.

There’s nothing quite like the look in the eyes of a child. Filled with wonder and the willingness and urgency to compete, a child is our most precious resource for the future, and the special education students of the Eagle Pass Independent School District are no different from their classmates and the Special Education Department under the caring watchful eye of Directress Delia Gonzalez are looking out for our children, especially in terms of giving them a quality head start to life which includes the opportunity to feel success in the field of play.
“We are celebrating the Special Olympics for this school year. Because of inclement weather we could not have the event outside, but we did have our ceremonies at our arena,” sated Gilbert Gonzalez, EPISD Superintendent, “We have a lot of participants from Eagle Pass and from surrounding school districts like La Pryor, Carrizo Springs and Crystal City so despite the weather I think we’ll have a really, really good showing here with the athletes.”
Gonzalez thanked his students, their teachers and parents for all their efforts and commitment to organizing an activity as large as the EPISD Special Olympics.
