Sgt. Orlando Escareño informed the News Gram of the fact that the Emergency Communication System team met this morning after another round of heavy rains assaulted our fair city in the early morning hours of Wednesday.
Escareño said that while several streets were being monitored on the south side of Eagle Pass in the lower lying areas such as Roosevelt Street, most of the water had already receded and more rain was expected over the course of the week and into next.
Public Works crews could also be seen monitoring reservoirs such as the one on Cherry Leaf which is being worked on now in order to have a better flow of drainage when they do in fact complete the 1,400 linear feet of drainage to this area, followed by another 1,500 feet which will take water through Memorial Junior High and across Elk Indio Highway.
“We met as departments and we have been monitoring the entire county for flooding, to see if streets need to be closed.  To open a shelter in case people need a dry place to go.  Up to now all streets are re-opened, we are monitoring El Indio Highway, Hidalgo, Roosevelt, Colorado and Trinity Streets are all being monitored.”
“We received notifications of severe thunderstorms in the area of Eagle Pass and Maverick County,” sated Fire Marshall Rudy Cardona, “Chief Mello was on both sides of town monitoring water over bridges.  277 in Quemado was closed for a period of time on Tuesday.  We are also monitoring the Elm Creek area in north Maverick County as well as Memo Robinson, Las Quintas and Las Brisas and we used two separate warnings on our mass communication system.”
Cardona as well as Emergency Management Coordinator Polo Vielma urge citizens to go to the City of Eagle Pass website to register on the city’s new mass communication system.
