In a game which was decided by three second half drives by the CC Winn offense, the Mavericks were able to come away with a 23-16 victory which catapults them to their first ever 2-0 start over former Mavericks Head Coach David Charles' Laredo Martin Tigers on Friday evening. As the Tigers went into the locker room with a 7-0 lead, the Mavs came out with three scoring drives in the second half to come away with the hard-fought victory.

Winn struck first in the second half with a 42 yard TD run by Sophomore sensation Deion Alonso. Alonso could've run the first play from scrimmage for a TD, but was tripped up on a well designed screen in which he had 70 yards to paydirt. The Mavericks capitalized once again on an 11 yard TD pass from Jaime Vargas to tight end Emilio Hinojosa for the second score on a beautiful play-action fake to Alonso and a bootleg left by Vargas to find Hinojosa alone in the endzone for the score. Vargas scored again on a QB sneak to make the score 21-9 after a Martin safety. The Maverick defense also scored a safety with Cris Cantú providing an outstanding defensive performance with 5 solo tackles, 6 assists and a QB pressure.  He also stepped in front of a Tiger pass and could've run it back for a score but failed to complete the interception which could've ended up in another Mav TD. Eric Maldonado also had a standout defensive performance with 4 tackles, 3 assists, 2 QB pressures and a broken pass play. Defensive tackle Jose Luis Flores was a defensive standout in only his second varsity game notching a tackle, three assists and a tackle for a loss, 2 QB pressures and a sack. Lupe Lopez had his second straight strong game with two tackles, two assists and two tackles for a loss. And Mark Perez was outstanding with 1 unassisted tackle, two assists and 2 QB pressures. "We're proud of our players," said Head Coach George Ruiz, "We were behind in both of our first two games and found ways to keep fighting and come back and play through the second quarter showing a lot of character to win these games."
