Chavez made a pivotal presentation outlining the impending need to improve the infrastructure in the Las Quintas Fronterizas, the Memorial Junior High area and across El Indio Highway.
Francisco Salazar, Laredo Border Field Officer for the Office of Colonia Initiatives informed Mayor Ramsey English-Cantú of the approval after Thursday's presentation which in his words was a "successful Colonia Resident Advisory Council meeting."
The proposal itself calls for $620,000.00 for flood and drainage facilities which include flood and drainage facilities, $150,000.00 for what was termed housing reconstruction which will assist eligible homeowners whose homes are beyond rehabilitation repair with the reconstruction of their homes, $150,000.00 for administration, planning and management and $80,000.00 for public service.
The presentation included a general explanation of what the Colonia Self-Help Center does for the people of the colonias from a tool lending library to a computer lab, clean-up campaigns and construction classes to an outline of proposed drainage projects in Las Quintas, Loma Bonita, Cedar Ridge, Morales and Morales Subdivision 2A. A breakdown of the Rio Grande Tributary 3 Flood Control Projects in the form of a benefit cost summary was also included in the presentation.
Chavez also went on to display the estimated precipitation amounts across the Rio Grande Plains on June 14 and 15, 2013 as well as pictures of evacuation procedures conducted by the city on those days.
The meeting was also attended by Executive Finance Director San Juana Garcia, Ivan Morua, Chief of Staff, Commissioner Roberto Ruiz, Commissioner Jerry Morales, Road & Bridge Superintendent Ernesto Guevara and Mr. Chavez.
Representatives from The City of Eagle Pass, Starr County and Cameron County also attended.
