Coach Roger Olivas informed The New Gram of the fact that several of his Eagle Pass Eagles are off to the Region IV Track Meet which will be held this weekend at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio.
"All the kids did well. The competition was top level," stated Head Track Coach Roger Olivas, "Our kids stepped up and did magnificently. Ty continues to be one of the top jumpers in the state as he won this competition by four feet with an amazing 47' 5 1/4". Olivas says that many schools still inquire about Chisum for his abilities in track and field despite his being committed to attend and play QB at Texas A&M Kingsville.
"Our 800 meter runner (Javier Guevara) is one of the top 800 meter runners in the region.
Sophomore Riche Flores missed out of advancing to Regionals by one spot with a 15.92 in the 110 meter high hurdles as did the 800 meter relay team of Jose Valero, Rich Gonzalez, Eli Guardiola and Mark Venegas.
"Our mile relay got second and is one of the top in the region. I just got a call from UTSA and they will be looking at RJ Valdez in both the 400 meters and the mile relay."
Olivas also mentioned that both Javier Guevara and Victor Garcia have been sought after by several colleges, however they will both be going to UT on academic scholarships.
"Iram Gaitan came in fourth in the shot put, but he's been known to throw in the 50's and if he can do that, he can go to state and make some noise at regionals. Our discus thrower Cristian Maldonado is peaking at the right time.
The Region IV AAAAAA Track Meet begins today at Alamo Stadium.
