The need to repair in-house communication systems, an issue with the transport of food from the Maverick County Detention Center to the Tom Bowles facility also resulted in an order to have health inspectors come in to address the cleanliness and hygiene of both the area where food is being repaired as well as the modes of transportation and the vehicles being used in the process.
Other needs such as proper procedures for the documentation of prisoner access and movement within the facility to and from their recreational areas were also mentioned within the context of the inspection by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
According to Sheriff Tom Schmerber, they are meeting with their staff and the necessary maintenance and repair has been initiated to alleviate the most pressing needs and he feels it will take anywhere from $15,000-$20,000 for these issues to be addressed and corrected.
Most of these issues have a 60-day window to be corrected while others call for 60-90 days before policies and schedules are reviewed once again in order for the facility to remain open, but the sheriff feels confident that he and his staff can do so within the allotted time period and a complete report, plus an exclusive interview with The News Gram will appear in Sunday's edition.
