A highly positive aspect of operations at this time in the housing authority is the recent high marks received after an audit was completed by White, Zamaniego and Campbell of El Paso who completed the audit of the overall program which turned out to be in what Executive Director Mary Velasquez called 'clean.'
"We are getting good scores and for this I have my staff and employees to thank for their efforts to maintain the high standards we hold ourselves to at the EPHA. I'm very proud of the team we have right now," added the directress, "Everybody's committed to their job."
Part of her administrative team of Cris Salazar, Section 8 Supervisor, Elisa Cano, Public Housing Supervisor, Clarissa Rodriguez, Finance Supervisor, Jessic Ortiz, HR and Security Supervisor and Humberto Venegas, Maintenance Foreman were front and center on this evening and provided their individual reports to the board.
The EPHA is also proud to announce that they have received a score of 100 on their Section 8 Program and a 96 on their Public Housing Program for fiscal year ended June 30, 2014.
"The Section 8 Program is a voucher system in which applicants search for a home of their choice and receive rental assistance. This money goes directly to the property owners. The EPHA currently manages 413 vouchers which translate to an influx into our local economy of approximately $2.25 million per year."
"The Public Housing Program is similarly important," concluded the director, "It's economic impact is over $3 million through payment of salaries, purchases and construction contracts."
Under this program, 502 homes are leased to low income families including our elderly and disabled and the EPHA also manages 60 homes for migrant families under a USDA program.
Velasquez informed The News Gram of the fact that they continue forward with important construction projects which have been underway for some time now such as the replacement of the water and sewer lines at Loma de la Cruz at a cost of $550,000.00 and the Mabe Terrace re-roofing project which had a total price tag of $619,000.00.
Receiving such high scores is the culmination of their hard work and commitment. The Eagle Pass Housing Authority Executive Director thanks the Board of Commissioners (Ana Gonzalez, Rolando Salinas, Delfina Garza, Pete Venegas and Rudy Valdez) for their support and guidance, "We will continue to strive for excellence and accomplish our mission to provide 'Decent, safe and affordable housing' to those families and individuals in need."
