On Thursday morning an event was held in order to celebrate the first shovel of earth to be dug into the ground commemorating the onset of the building of the new overpass on the corner of El Indio Highway and Monroe.

The event was coordinated by Melissa Montemayor, Regional Directress of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).  Present were many local dignitaries and city authorities headed by the Honorable Ramsey English-Cantu, Mayor of the City of Eagle Pass and The Honorable David R. Saucedo, Maverick County Judge. Montemayor stated that the investment on said overpass would be in the $12 million range and they expect construction to be complete by October of 2013. City authorities as well as County authorities are pleased by the initiation of work to the much needed project which will alleviate traffic downtown as well as make travel in this area the more time efficient, especially when coming and going to Mexico. Mayor Cantu stated that they have been waiting several years for this project to come to fruition and he was concerned that the funding for the project would be available in order for it to become a reality. Now there will be two overpasses to coincide with both international bridges, which will speed up traffic into the country and alleviate the problem of having to deal with the crossing of the train at different hours of the day. Montemayor added that TxDOT has other projects in the planning stages for Eagle Pass and Maverick County as the "Outer Loop" is currently under construction and could be opened as soon as two weeks. Judge Saucedo also added that County authorities are working on the new highway that would connect Eagle Pass to our sister city of Laredo.
