According to information received, the new K-9 is only a puppy, and it will be a few years before he can substitute one of our older K-9 officers. These animals remain under the close watchful custody of a police officer who has the training to adequately care for and continue training the dog. These canines are officially considered to be just like any other officer of the law and should be prepared to do its duty when called upon. They have the capacity to sniff out an array of different things such as cash, drugs, other prohibited substances, explosives and even cadavers and/or living human beings and are valued for their exceptional contributions to investigations. The police department along with the Sheriff's Department, Border Patrol and the Department of Homeland Security all incorporate the use of K-9 officers.
