A horrific accident which left five dead and two injured occurred between 5:00 and 6:00 PM on Thursday about eight miles east of Batesville on a curve just on the outskirts of the town where it was reported that two pickup trucks hit head on.
Trooper Maria Loredo, Public Information Officer for the Texas Department of Public Safety informed The News Gram of the fact that two pickup trucks collided head-on on a curve killing five people instantly and emergency medical personnel airlifted two survivors to a San Antonio hospital.
Investigators were attempting to reconstruct the scene along with what Trooper Loredo called a Crash Construction Team to assist them with the investigation as to ascertain exactly what caused the accident.
What is known is that the weather was particularly bad with 20-30 MPH winds blowing bringing in a cold front and visibility may have been a factor as billowing clouds filled the air.
The victims and their families, one family from Crystal City and one from Eagle Pass, are reeling after three of the five occupants in one vehicle perished and a mother and her child from Eagle Pass were also killed in the crash.
The highway was closed for hours and investigating officers worked late into the evening both working the accident scene as well as re-directing oncoming traffic.
