Local authorities traveled to Austin to be present at the "Eagle Pass and Maverick County Day" held at the House of Representatives during the 74th Texas Legislature, to officially lobby to our state's leaders for our needs on this, the US-Mexico Border.

Present were State Senator Carlos Uresti and State Representative Poncho Nevarez who graciously hosted the group of elected officials and community leaders on this day.

Some of the most pressing needs at this time include the closing of Loop 480 from Highway 57 to Del Rio Boulevard among other issues brought to the attention of both the legislature as well as the senate.

The congregation was also escorted to the House Chamber where they were able to listen in on the address by newly elected governor Greg Abbott.

They then attended a luncheon in their honor with Senator Uresti which was held at the Lunch-Scholz Garden before proudly enjoying a performance by the Mariachi Aguilas de Oro as well as El Mariachi Toro Azabache from both local high schools in the Open Air Rotunda Capitol Extension.

Their visit culminated in a Policy Q&A session in the Capital Conference Room with the Texas Department of Transportation and the Texas Education Agency.

Newly elected board member Rudy Bowles weighed in on several key points he heard Governor Abbott make in his address, "There are many things coming in this governor's term which may affect us such as Open Carry and most importantly the voucher system, but we were very clear with our legislators as to how it is going to directly affect us and subsequent state funding over this time period," said Mr. Bowles, "Some other issues we discussed dealt with the fact that Eagle Pass is now the biggest hub in the state for international railroad trade which makes us a key player and we should reap the benefits of this."

Bowles added that the issue of the Dos Republicas Coal Mine was also discussed and how the state will carefully keep tabs on all TCEQ and EPA regulations on its activity.

One interesting point he made was the direct comparison to Laredo which he said had to relocate their railway system outside the limits of the city which may occur one day as well as the direct road from Eagle Pass to Laredo which could economically affect our community as well as keep our citizens safe from the horrifying traffic on Highway 83 which has caused the untimely deaths of many of our loved ones.

City Councilwoman Gloria Hernandez also weighed in on the significance of the event, "We had a very productive meeting with representatives from TxDoT which will benefit Eagle Pass greatly in the future, but we will start working diligently on this as soon as possible."
