On Sunday, before the 5:00 game between the Am-Mex Swarm and the Sugarland Legends was supposed to get underway, Mexican Customs agents arrived to question both teams in reference to their paperwork or permission to be in the country.
All of the players were questioned by authorities before the game was called by organizers leaving the hundreds in attendance wondering what had occurred as at least six games had already been held in the Santiago V. Gonzalez Auditorium where the Swarm have gone undefeated and stand atop the Southwestern Division going into the playoffs which will be held next month on this side of the border at the Laredo Energy Arena.
According to reports, a US citizen who is not going beyond the 22 Km. as a tourist does not need a passport to cross the river and shop per se, and in this case the players are playing in a venue which has not charged a fee to watch the ABA games all season, thus not requiring a work permit.
Raul Perez, one of the representatives of the Swarm stated in an interview that he has no idea why officials came in at this time for these exact reasons and also added that the team has never been questioned before. He also said that he and the organization are prepared to fill out any paperwork they need to, if someone would inform them what exact permit needs to be requested.
