A man wanted by the Bexar County Sheriff's Department for a New Year's Day shooting made his way to our border, crossed the International Bridge with a loaded weapon and opened fire on a shopping center full of people, killing two men and injuring two women before being apprehended by Piedras Negras Police.

Police arrested Ignacio Ruiz, 37, and a female companion after the aforementioned fugitive opened fire with a semi automatic handgun at about 3 PM in front of an area frequented by shoppers on Saturday, shooting a taxi driver four times as the man, 44 year-old Felipe Lopez Navarrete, attempted to flee from the couple.

Lopez Navarrete died from his wounds as one of the four gunshots traversed his throat causing irreparable damage to blood vessels and his breathing passage.

When Ruiz saw police approaching, he proceeded to empty his handgun, hitting 24 year-old police officer Jaime Antonio Sornia de Luna in the chest. Sornia de Luna later perished in a Saltillo, Coahuila hospital from this wound as the projectile traversed his lung and damaged other vital organs.

Piedras Negras Mayor Fernando Purón Johnston informed the general public of the officer's passing on Sunday offering his condolences to the family of the fallen officer via his Twitter account on Sunday.

Also injured in the shooting were Ana Delia Hernandez and Maribel Gonzalez Palma.

According to Mexican officials, Ruiz will be tried, sentenced and sent to prison for the double homicide, for the injuries sustained by the two females and for auto theft as he fled from the scene in the taxi cab before being detained by police and until then will be handed over to US authorities.

According to a release by the US Marshals Service, members of the United States Marshals Service Lone Star Fugitive Task Force (LSFTF) became aware that Ruiz had an active arrest warrant for his involvement in the shooting death of a man that took place New Year’s Day near the cross streets of Aliann Drive and Macdona LaCoste Road in San Antonio.

Through investigative efforts, task force officers determined that both Igancio Ruiz and Ismael Ruiz had been hiding out in a trailer home located in the 600 block of Brewer Street in La Pryor, TX. Task force officers along with assistance from the Texas Rangers and Zavala County Sheriff’s Office (ZCSO) approached the trailer home, identified themselves, and took Ismael Ruiz into custody without incident, but Ignacio Ruiz was not located. Task force officers later learned that Ignacio Ruiz had been previously transported to Eagle Pass, TX, where he crossed the border into the Republic of Mexico. Isidro Lopez was arrested for transporting and assisting Ignacio Ruiz in his escape.

Ruiz is accused of shooting and allegedly killing 27 year-old Joshua Vidales at the aforementioned location and when returned to the US, he will face charges of 1st Degree Murder.
