Graves Wins UIL Sweepstakes!

The Graves Tigers are 2014 UIL Champions!  They outlasted a late push by Liberty to come away with Sweepstakes at the yearly academic competition held at CC Winn High School on Saturday, December 13th.

Graves accumulated a total of 235 points to Liberty's 228.  Glass came in third with 202.5 points and the pride of the southside, the Fightin' Ray Darr Mavericks placed fourth with 166.  Cerna was fifth with 149, Mancha placed sixth with 126.5, HBG came in seventh with 105 points, Robert E. Lee scored 97, Benavides had 90.5, Seco Mines tallied 88, Rosita Valley had 61.5, Sam Houston 60, Pete Gallego totaled 44 points to San Luis' 40 and the Kirchner Cowboys had 12 points in the showcase of the best of the best students the EPISD has to offer.

Abby Jimenez of Liberty took first place in Calculator Applications, Jessica Salazar of Benavides was second and Graves' Edward Mendoza placed third.

Ray Darr's Angelina Rodriguez won the Creative Writing competition which is a contest near and dear to our heart here at The Eagle Pass News Gram.  Graves' Liana Maus was second and Marichel Hernandez of Pete Gallego was third.

In Dictionary Skills, Colin Caballero of Glass won first place in the 5th grade division, Cassidy Garcia of Graves was second and Angel Medina of Seco Mines was third.  In the 6th grade division, it was Graves' Malinalli Cisneros in first, Marcos Montemayor of Robert E. Lee was second and Danica Gonzalez of Liberty was third.

n Listening Skills, 5th grade, Galilea Cruz of Perfecto Mancha was first, Iliana Carrillo of the Fightin' Glass Falcons placed second and Alex Hinojosa of Ray Darr was third.  Ana Maria Guerra of Graves won the 6th grade competition, Claudia Cervantes of HBG was second and Cerna's Bryana Trejo was third.

It was Liberty's Maryam Sharafeldin winning the Maps, Charts & Graphs event.  Glass' Claudette Lopez placed second and Leah Barragan of HBG placed third in the 5th grade contest.  In 6th grade Ismael Naveja of Liberty Elementary was crowned 2014 Maps, Charts and Graphs Champion, Glass' Arianna Castañeda was second and Brianna Gonzalez of Cerna was third.

In Mathematics, Robert E. Lee's Maria Fernanda Bustos was first in the 5th grade competition, Ray Darr's Monica Rodriguez was second and Graves' Humberto Fernandez was third.  In the 6th grade event, Leopoldo Campos of Graves was first, San Luis' Alex Jimenez was second and Ray Darr's Amalio Corral placed third.

Robert E. Lee's Jose De Luna won first place in 4th grade number sense, a competition that former Ray Darr Number Sense Coach Extraordinaire Herminia Macias used to dominate year after year.Lo and behold, Darr's Christopher Wheeler is still carrying the Purple & Gold Number Sense Torch for the Mavs as he placed second, and Sofia Soto of Graves was third at the 4th grade level.

In 5th grade, Angel Valles of Glass was first, Cerna's Jesus Villarreal was second and Ramon Salinas of Pete Gallego was tied for second.  In the 6th grade Leopoldo Campos of Graves came in first, San Luis' Alex Jimenez was second and Mia Uriegas of Liberty placed third.

In Oral Reading 4th Grade it was Elicia Acosta of Robert E. Lee bringing home the gold for Blanca Musquiz, Mariano Flores of Benavides Heights was second and Adan Melchor of HBG placed third.  In 5th grade it was Benavides' Regina Ramirez was first, HBG's Stephanie Ferguson was second and Shayla Knapp of Cerna was third.  In 6th grade it was Liberty's Kimberly Vasquez in first, Ana Laura Soto of Graves second and Rosita Valley's Christina Diaz coming in third for Annette Lazarski's Roadrunners.

In another Gram favorite, the Ready Writing competition, it was Almagaly Gouldburn winning the third grade contest out of Cerna Elementary, Glass' Ayden Caballero came in second and Graves' Mariana Sanchez was third at the 3rd grade level.  

In 4th grade, Alisa Zamora of Graves was first, Zenaida Rodriguez came in second out of Cerna and Liberty's Alexis Noe was third.  In the 5th grade contest it was Aliza Ramon of Cerna in first, Glass' Monica Garza second and Liberty's Maryam Sharafeldin third.  

The 6th graders had Graves' Ana Laura Soto place first, Ray Darr's Ingrid Rodriguez carrying the Ready Writing torch for the Mavs in second and Rosita Valley's Christina Diaz placing third.

Ray Darr's Cesar Picazo won the 5th grade Science contest while Benavides' Emily Diaz placed second and Liberty's Alton Dodd coming in third.  HBG's Alan Vidaurri won first at the 6th grade level, Glass' Valerie Muñoz was second and Sam Houston's Ivan Molina was third for the Cougars.

Anthony Vences of Mancha won the eloquent Spanish Poetry competition at the 4th grade level while HBG's Ashley Estrada placed second.  Liberty's Camila Garcia placed third.  Mancha's Analucia Hernandez won the 5th grade event, Sofia Soto came in second out of Graves and Andrea Gonzalez was third from Liberty.  In 6th grade Ximena Moran of Pete Gallego was first preventing a Mancha sweep of the event, Mancha's Fernando Villarreal placed second and Angelica Perales of Cerna placed third.

In 4th grade spelling, Mancha's Anthony Vences placed first at the 4th grade level, HBG's Ashley Estrada was second and Liberty's Camila Garcia placed third.  In 5th grade, Analucia Hernandez of Mancha was first, Graves' Sofia Soto was second and Liberty's Andrea Gonzalez was third.  In the 6th grade contest it was Gallego's Ximena Moran taking first, Mancha's Fernando Villarreal placed second and Cerna's Angelica Perales was third.

Last, but certainly not least are our Shakespearian actors who play out their talents in the much heralded Storytelling competition which is specifically for 2nd and 3rd graders.  At the 2nd grade level it was Cerna's Ashley Garza taking first place, Glass Elementary's very own Anali Carrillo came in second and Mancha's Erika De Leon was third.  

 

At the 3rd grade level, it was Cerna's Sarah Mendoza placing first, Seco Mines' Isabella De La garza second and ray Darr's Jose L. Martinez coming in third.
