According to witnesses, the pole was almost in the driver's seat of the vehicle. What was even more unexpected was the fact that the driver exited from the wreck and bolted south on Memo Robinson.
The deputy, knowing that he had backup coming, alertly took off behind the suspect reaching him as he approached a local junkyard where the man was apprehended.
When a check was done on the vehicle, a quantity of approximately 218 Lbs. of marijuana was found in the trunk of the vehicle as well as in the back seat.
According to unofficial reports, the young man may have been seen loading the contraband into his vehicle adjacent to the Rio Grande by US Border Patrol who he may have seen behind him, hence the high rate of speed on El Indio Highway.
Citizens in the immediate area were left without electricity for some time while AEP crews came out to assist and traffic was not able to pass through this intersection from El Indio and Veterans to the entrance of Las Quintas Blvd. until approximately 12:00 midnight.
The case remains under investigation by the Eagle Pass Police Department, the Maverick County Sheriff's Department and the US Border Patrol.
