When we were told that Ignacio Madera would be honored with a proclamation at this week's regular meeting of Maverick County Commissioner's Court, this reporter was taken back to the days when we saw an eighteen year-old decided to put the skills learned in Lynn Purcell's Eagle Pass High School Student Council to productive use as he threw his proverbial hat in the ring to run for the EPISD Board of Trustees.

Why you might ask?  In my humble opinion, he took a page out of Justice Patricia Alvarez' book where she says that she refuses to sit in her rocking chair when she calls it a day and think "I should have done this or I could have done that", instead he began making a difference in his community as we say "De una vez."

The rest of the story we all know and admire, but on this day he was recognized for the work he does now at the Department of Rehabilitative Services where he works diligently to try to get employment opportunities for disabled citizens, a sometimes thankless job which in many ways is also touching the future without forgetting the past as these individuals may not have the capabilities they may have once possessed, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with their minds and the will to work and be productive is still burning strong as it does with our man Nacho whom many of us can say is our friend.
