Maverick County Jail

Ricardo Ramos, County Attorney, informed The News Gram that the situation involving Justice of the Peace Cesar Perez has been clarified.  As you may have read in the pages of The News Gram, Perez was denied access to the jail and could not fulfill his duties of magistrating prisoners due to a mandate handed down by Sheriff Tom Herrera last Friday. According to Mr. Ramos, the entire situation was caused due to some confusion.  The parties involved understood the situation and all parties involved came to an agreement and he was told that it would not happen again. Ramos stated that it was all a misunderstanding.  Last week, the JP on call was Cesar Iracheta, who happened to be out of town, therefore when Perez arrived to magistrate an individual, he was not allowed to do so, because it was not his turn.  He reiterated that regardless, a Justice of the peace should not be denied the right to do his job. Therefore, Judge Perez can and will continue to be able to magistrate prisoners.
