Deputies from the MCSO, along with police officers from the Eagle Pass Police Department who provided support in this shooting which is not the first such incident that occurs at the establishment. The shooting is raising questions as to security at the entrances of such bars to check for weapons and/or licenses for the prevention of underage drinking.
Maverick County Chief Deputy Rick Fuentes informed The News Gram of the fact that there was indeed a shooting at the establishment on or around 1:30 AM where a report was made to MCSO of gunshots fired at Gerardo's Bar on FM 1021.
Three victims, 38 year-old Jose Hernandez Vargas, 35 year-old Jose Santos, Jr. and 17 year-old Jose Santos, III were all shot, some multiple times in the back.
Two of the men, Hernandez Vargas and Santos, Jr. were airlifted to a San Antonio hospital. Hernandez was released on Sunday after being treated for his injuries, but Santos, Jr. remains hospitalized with a punctured lung.
According to Chief Fuentes, the investigation is yielding valuable information which could lead to an arrest soon as there are multiple suspects who could have taken it upon themselves to mount such an attack in a public place.
As of press time, we do not know if there was more than one gunman, the motive for the violence, the exact number of gunshots fired, the caliber of the weapons or whether they were in the bar before the shooting.
The case remains under investigation by the Maverick County Sheriff's Department in conjunction with the Texas Rangers.
