The Eagle Pass News Gram was in San Antonio on Tuesday to meet with FBI Director James Comey who stated that there are indeed pockets of terrorists who are being harbored in countries in the Middle East and in Africa. Comey said that when he thinks of Syria and Iraq, he sees it as a train- ing ground, a "Sheltering ground and a safe haven right now for thousands of terrorists."

The most chilling comment he made in reference to the threat of terror may lie in our very own backyard as he confirmed they are watching more than 100 Americans for the possibility that they will commit jihad, he told a gather- ing of police chiefs, sheriffs and law enforcement officials at the FBI headquarters in San

Antonio. He addressed several issues which in his terms are priorities, however he refrained from rating them in any particular order which range from civil rights investigations, terrorism, counterterrorism, counterintelligence, kidnappings, drug cartels, sex trafficking, border security and violent crimes.

When addressed about cases of corruption in Eagle Pass and Maverick County, he said that he could not remember any specific cases here, but he did say that his offices in Del Rio and across South Texas are working diligently to cease and deter corruption. "If you have people and you have power, at some point you're going to have problems with corruption, or abuse. That's just the nature of human beings. We're just flawed. "

When asked about the Michael Brown shooting in St. Louis, he of course advised the reporter that he could not comment on current investigations and diverted the query by stating so, "I can't say much except that I believe that in our St. Louis division we have opened an investigation to look into that matter along with the Department of Justice. We don't talk about our investigations of any sort because in an investigation it allows us to gather facts, all the facts unblemished by people's commentary."

Comey added that the officers behind him provide the necessary vigilance and outreach to be able to provide the necessary web of law enforcement to be prepared to address and more importantly, to prevent such horrendous crimes from happening.

"We understand the challenge we face in that short window of time between emergence and a killing. The first person who is going to see a Syrian traveler coming or going is highly likely to be a sheriff's deputy or a police officer on patrol and the partnerships represented on this podium are critical to protecting this country."

The FBI's leader, only the seventh man to hold the office of director for the nation's highest ranking law enforcement entity said that he counts on the eyes and ears of every American to advise local agencies of any instance where they may feel that something is out of the ordinary.

"If someone would just tell us, 'Hey we're worried about this guy that I saw just acting this way' we'll check it out. If it's nothing, no one will ever find out about it. Done. But if it's something, we can save a life together."
